Day 2 Nigeria Mining Week

The second day of the Nigerian Mining Week was another remarkable experience. The day commenced with a message from Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, delivered by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Senator Akume remarked, "This year's theme, 'Capitalizing on Nigeria's Critical Mineral Resources for Economic Growth,' underscores the federal government's commitment to sustainable development, investment, and cooperation within the mining industry, with a special emphasis on harnessing the full potential of the Nigerian mining industry." Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL) is delighted to contribute to the realization of Nigeria's mineral resource potential.

Next, the ministerial address was delivered by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, who discussed the creation of "an attractive investment climate and instilling confidence in domestic and international investors. These efforts have yielded fruitful results through strategic partnerships that recognize the immense potential within our borders. These partnerships will play a pivotal role in building a sustainable and globally competitive mining industry."

The series of addresses set a positive tone for the day. A panel discussion on exploring commercial opportunities in a changing environment followed, with Mr. Chris Omo-Osagie, Chief Financial Officer of Thor Explorations Limited (representing SROL), participating in the discussions. Mr. Omo-Osagie emphasized that the Nigerian government's restriction on exporting unprocessed minerals would benefit the country, as the value of raw minerals significantly differs from processed minerals, with a 10-12x variation.

It's noteworthy that SROL boasts a processing plant designed for an ore throughput of 715,000 tpa and achieves an impressive gold recovery rate of approximately 97%. An essential aspect of their process is that SROL processes its gold in its plant at the Segilola Gold Mine in Osun state, thereby creating in-country value.

Mr. Omo-Osagie also discussed the significance of the planned Nigerian Solid Minerals Corporation and its potential positive impact in collaboration with multinational companies to support, invest in, and develop the Nigerian mining industry. Overall, the panel discussion was engaging, and SROL was pleased to participate in these critical conversations.

In the final panel session of the day, titled "Youth Integration in the Mining Ecosystem: How to Harness New Talents," the moderator directed questions to SROL, represented by Ms. Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, the SROL Community Development and Stakeholder Manager. She provided an insightful response, detailing the various initiatives SROL is currently involved in to engage with the youth. These initiatives include:

  • The SROL community youth empowerment initiative, now in its fourth edition.
  • The SROL internship program, where a remarkable 75.69% of interns were offered employment at the company. Ms. Amoda also highlighted the example of young mining and processing plant professionals from SROL who were participating in NMW, earning applause from the audience. This led to further discussions and photographs with various delegates and young people after the panel session.

SROL took pride in participating in several other events on Day 2, including the CEO Roundtable discussion with the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake.
