Nigeria Mining Week is an annual event for all mining stakeholders and influencers in both the public and private sectors interested in doing business in Nigeria. It was founded eight years ago by the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN) in conjunction with PwC and The Vuka Group, with support from the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), in the propagation of our strong ties and engagement with the government, participated as diamond sponsors of the Nigeria Mining Week. The pre-conference meetings and events began on Monday, October 16th in Abuja.

Day 1's highlight was a panel discussion on "women inclusion-dialogue on making women part of the solution." SROL, known as the mining industry's pacesetter, did not shy away from these discussions. Ms. Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, SROL Community Development, and Stakeholder Manager spoke on the panel about the state of gender inclusion in the sector and the innovative and aggressive efforts that SROL is taking to achieve increased female representation in the workforce.

Ms. Sarkar-Amoda acknowledged the SROL CEO, Mr. Segun Lawson, for his intentional efforts at creating a diverse workforce and for placing competent women in traditionally male roles, like hers. She also acknowledged the part that her male colleagues have played in ensuring that she is respected and supported in external meetings, especially in very patriarchal settings.

SROL has female representation at all levels of the organization, from entry-level to executive. The organization is delighted to have women in typically male-dominated jobs, such as dump truck drivers, geologists, and process plant engineers. The company hasn't stopped there; as part of its sustainability efforts, it has established progressive targets for female representation.

The company is also pushing younger generations to pursue STEM and other historically male-dominated fields. In 2022, SROL hosted a career talk event for secondary school girls in its host communities, introducing them to women in traditionally masculine occupations and encouraging them not to limit themselves while choosing career pathways and possibilities.
