Our attention has been drawn to an article titled “Cry Me a River: How Mining Polluted Nigeria’s Sacred River” and different iterations of the same article on the web. Whilst we share concerns over the pollution of the Osun River we noticed, with unease, some insinuations regarding our operations and the pollution of this river which are untrue.

In the interest of clarification, our flagship project and Nigeria’s first commercial gold mine, Segilola Gold Mine, is not and has never been responsible for the environmental degradation of the Osun River or its tributaries, nor in areas of impact in and around our project site.

The Segilola Gold Mine is located in a completely different watershed from the Osun River and does not generate any waste that is discarded into any water body. Upon commencement of its mining operations, the Company retained the services of a third-party accredited Geotechnical Laboratory and Field-Testing Specialist Company that conducts monthly environmental testing and compliance monitoring, which is witnessed by regulators.

We wish to inform the general public that Segilola conducts its activities in a safe, sustainable and environmentally responsible manner and remains committed to full compliance with regulatory requirements and international best practices.

The company realizes the devastating effects of illegal mining on the environment and will continue to work with and support the relevant authorities in combatting this menace.  

We encourage members of the public to be aware of the watershed analysis of the Osun River below and note that there is no water body near the Segilola Gold Mine that empties into the Osun River, to avoid the spread of misleading information
