Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL) charged Nigerian girls to take up the challenge of pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at a career-talk event organised for its host community secondary school girls, to commemorate the 2022 International Women’s Day (IWD). 

As the world moves to break biases and stereotypes against women and the girl-child, speakers at the event were firm in their submissions that, with determination and the right motivation, more Nigerian girls will be set to succeed in STEM subjects and courses. The speakers spoke about the gender gap in STEM fields in the country and encouraged secondary school girls, to consider STEM fields as a viable option when making their academic and career decisions.

In her welcome address, the Chairperson of the Atakumosa East Local Government Area, Princess Folusho Adekoya when speaking to over 250 young girls and guests gathered at the Iperindo Townhall encouraged the girls to "break the bias and walk in the footsteps of Nigerian women who have distinguished themselves in their fields, broken biases, endured and surmounted several challenges to pave the way for the younger generations". 

Speaking on the opportunities available in STEM, Prof. Abimbola Iyanda, a professor of computer science and engineering at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife narrated her experience and encouraged the girls to be inquisitive, put no limits on what they can become and make informed decisions regarding studying in the STEM field. 

Deputy Director, ASM of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Engineer Banke Onoak, further admonished the girls to be persistent, disciplined and always strive for excellence in whatever they do. She explained that those are the qualities required to succeed and remain at the top. 

A panel of female employees in the SROL management team comprising Mary Oladele, Process Excellence Supervisor; Samantha Kusi-Appiah, Metallurgist; Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, Community Development and Stakeholder Manager; and Odunayo Adeniji, HR Manager, discussed issues affecting girls’ involvement in STEM. They urged the participants to see beyond the challenges and build themselves with the right attitude and skills to succeed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
